Stock Gifts
The advantage of a stock donation is that you, the donor, avoid paying capital gains tax on the market value appreciation of the shares. This tax benefit can reduce the cost of the gift when long or mid-term appreciated stock is donated.
How to transfer stock that’s held in a brokerage account electronically
Transferring shares electronically via DTC (Digital Transport Communications) is the easiest way to give stock. Instruct your broker to transfer the shares to Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation. Our brokerage account is set up with:
Merrill Lynch & Company
101 S. Ellsworth Avenue 4th Floor
San Mateo, CA 94401
Your broker will need to know the following:
Account Number: 632-04018 Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation
DTC Number: 5198
Merrill Lynch Contact: John Ting
Contact Phone Number: 650-579 3040
We’ll use the date the shares enter our account as the gift date and credit you with the market value for that date. Since shares may be transferred without some information, including your name, please contact us at 650-696-5990 to let us know the gift is in process.
How to donate a stock certificate that is in your possession via mail
Do not sign the certificates. Send them via registered mail to:
Attn: John Ting
Merrill Lynch & Company
101 S Ellsworth Avenue, 4th Floor
San Mateo, CA 94401
For each certificate you must provide a signed
stock power. This should be sent to the same address in a separate envelope. This is important for security reasons. Do not fill in any information on the stock power. Simply sign the document; the Foundation’s broker will complete the document. The name on the signature line of the stock power must be identical to the owner’s name on the stock certificate. Please attach a cover letter advising Merrill Lynch that you are donating it to the Foundation and indicate the purpose of the gift. The cover letter should include:
Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation
Account Number: 632-04018
1501 Trousdale Drive
Burlingame, CA 94010
If you have any questions about making a stock gift, please contact Sue Covey at 650-696-5931.
